Character Name: Sylvester 'Sly' Jackson
Age: 35
Date of Birth: February 8th, 1854
Gender: Male
Physical Description: Sly is a tall, lean man with caramel skin who stands at a respectable 6 feet 2 inches. His features are stern and angular, with a scar running down the right side of his face from his temple to his chin. His hair is neatly cropped and always cut short, if able to be maintained. He rarely, if ever, sports any facial hair and his clothing is humble, consisting of nothing fancier than a buttoned up shirt, vest, jeans and boots.
Backstory: Sly was born the son of a slave. His mother worked as the housekeeper of a cattle rancher, who also happened to be Sly's father. Unlike certain slaves who lived their lives in squalor being worked to the bone, him and his mother lived a relatively normal life, as the ranch owner only kept two or three slaves to help him with running the ranch. The owner, whose name was Jack Hopkins, was a widow and sought comfort in the embrace of Sly's mother, with whom he eventually sired a child. Life went on and, eventually, after the American Civil War, Sly and his mother were set free as dictated by the Emancipation Proclamation. However, due to the political and social climate in the south, as this ranch was located in Texas, the owner of the ranch agreed to employ the slaves as actual workers, rather than servants. For their own protection more than anything.
Time went on for the folks at the ranch. Sly began undertaking an educated, aided by his father who had taken a liking to the boy. He knew that it would be frowned upon currently but he hoped that by the time he passed away people would be more accepting of a black business owner, which is why he began mentoring the business. He'd take him with him on his trips to town, often garnering dirty looks from the locals. Years passed and Sly was all but a bona fide business man. However, rumors began to circulate about Sly's parents. He had lighter skin than most blacks and seeing as he was almost always seen in the company of his white father, it didn't take long for folks to realize that Jack might have gotten a bit too friendly with one of his former slaves. The fact that he'd had a child wasn't the problem, slave owners had their way with female slaves all the time. The problem was that the man was acting as if the boy was actually his son, which didn't sit well with most of the locals.
Sly was barely an adult when it happened, an angry mob had veritably lain siege to the ranch with the intent on burning it to the ground. Sly's mother was in too much of a panic to act, so his father went to one of the barns, saddled a horse and told Sly to get on and ride as far away as he could. With tears in his eyes he did so, leaving his family behind at the behest of his father. He never found out what happened to his family or the ranch, as the life of a freed slave in the south didn't afford too much idle time for contemplating the events that lead you to his moment in your life. He drifted around, eventually hearing about the government grants given to settled willing to brave the wide expanse of the western United States. The Wild West they called it, and to Sly it seemed like the perfect place to start fresh. He'd eventually go on to manage a general store in the town of Mountain Ridge, putting the skills his late father taught him to use.
